What is Botox Cosmetic?

Botox Cosmetic is a prescription medicine that can temporarily improve the appearance of frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet lines. It’s made with botulinum toxin, a unique ingredient that can reduce muscle activity in the treated area. The toxin affects muscles by blocking chemical movement signals, preventing unwanted facial activity that can result in creases and lines over time. It’s injected into the associated muscles at a planned injection site using a very fine needle and a precise eye for aesthetics.

What Can Botox Cosmetic Treat?

Botox Cosmetic can treat a wide variety of cosmetic concerns such as frown lines, crow’s feet lines, and forehead lines. It can also be used to lift the forehead, change the activity of the upper lip when smiling, and much more. Botox has been in use for decades as a treatment for muscle or nerve conditions, bladder control, and neck pain.

Is Botox Cosmetic Safe?

Botox Cosmetic has a long history of safe use when administered by a knowledgeable injector. That being said, it’s important to review any medications or new medicines (including muscle relaxants and sleep medicine), herbal supplements, and all your medical conditions with our team to ensure Botox Cosmetic will be safe and effective.

What are the Risks of Botox Cosmetic?

Botox Cosmetic is very safe and effective but can produce common side effects like mild redness, itchiness, and swelling at the injection site. Bruising is another common side effect, especially if you have an increased risk of bruising. Bruising can mainly be prevented by avoiding over-the-counter medicines such as blood thinners and aspirin-like products for two weeks before and after your treatment session. Bruising typically fades within a few days.

Very rarely, it can produce more serious symptoms. These can include:

  • Allergic reaction
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Asthma symptoms
  • Blurred vision
  • Muscle weakness (sometimes progressing to all-over muscle weakness)
  • Skin infection
  • Decreased eyesight
  • Double vision problems
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Drooping or other abnormal facial change

Extremely rarely, these reactions can be life-threatening. Keep in mind that these risks are very low and underscore the importance of reviewing your complete medical history with your injector to ensure you’re a good candidate for Botox Cosmetic.
