COSMETIC EYE SURGERY

AN ULTIMATE GUIDE ON COSMETIC EYE SURGERY BY COSMETIC EYE INSTITUTE – SELENA FU, MD

LET’S explore how Cosmetic Eye Institute can help you enhance your facial appearance and transform your eyelids.

Facial attractiveness is linked to the eye characteristics such as size, proportion, and shape. Youthful and attractive eyes are characteristics of facial balance, beauty and facial proportions. The eyes play an essential role in facial harmony and symbolize life’s vitality. This facial balance is not only about the eye color and size, but also  about the eye shape, hence the eyelids’ shape. With age, the skin around your eyes starts to sag, resulting in drooping upper eyelids and baggy lower lids. Ocular aesthetics is dedicated to correcting and improving the appearance of the eyes and eyelids, which deteriorate over time. We cannot blame age only, genetics and unprotected sun exposure also play a role in eyelids that change shape or skin sagging. What happens, then? You look sad, tired, worn out and older than your actual age. The great news is there is a solution – blepharoplasty, the aesthetic eyelid surgery to remove excess skin from your upper and lower eyelids. Let’s explore what blepharoplasty is, how it is performed and what aesthetic outcomes it can provide.

WHAT IS BLEPHAROPLASTY, AND HOW IS IT PERFORMED?

Blepharoplasty is a functional or aesthetic surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the upper or lower eyelids.

UPPER BLEPHAROPLASTY is the aesthetic removal of excess skin and fat by making an incision at the natural creases of the upper eyelid. During the surgical procedure, the muscles that raise the upper eyelid may be tightened to treat ptosis, which is eyelid drooping caused by eyelid muscle weakness, and the incision is closed by fine sutures.

LOWER BLEPHAROPLASTY is the surgical procedure to remove loose skin and bags from the lower eyelids. It is performed by making a hidden incision on the inside of the lower eyelid or along the lower lash line. The extra fats and excess skin are removed or repositioned during the process. Then your oculoplastic surgeon closes the incision with fine sutures. Dr. Selena Fu makes customized plans for the individual needs of her patients along with the surgery. Laser resurfacing or chemical peel can be used to make the lower eyelid skin smooth and tightened.

UPPER AND LOWER BLEPHAROPLASTY can be carried out at the same time or combined with a brow lift, forehead lift, mid-face lift, or skin resurfacing procedures.

WHAT IS ASIAN BLEPHAROPLASTY?

Asian blepharoplasty is also termed double eyelid surgery. Asian blepharoplasty is ideal for patients of east Asian descent who are born either with a partial pretarsal crease or no crease. The procedure is performed to create a crease in the upper eyelid. The procedure not only meets the cosmetic preferences of patients but also improves the line of vision and prevents eye irritation caused by lashes. Asian blepharoplasty is an ideal procedure for patients with monolids. During the procedure, the heavy-appearing fat deposits and excess sagging skin may be removed. Your oculoplastic surgeon will create an eyelid crease and then close the incisions with fine sutures.

WHAT IS LATISSE?

Latisse is an FDA-approved 0.03% bimatoprost ophthalmic solution that helps grow eyelashes for patients with inadequate or no lashes. Latisse treatment is applied only to the base of upper eyelashes under your ophthalmologist’s care. It is advised not to apply to the lower eyelid as hair may start to grow outside the treatment area. Also, consult your doctor in case of eye problems and if you had prior eye surgery. The only side effect of the Latisse treatment is itchy and red eyes. Results are not permanent; once you discontinue using Latisse, your lashes will return to their previous thickness and length.
